Abiola’s wife joins 2015 race for Lagos governoship seat

Mrs Modupe Onitiri-Abiola, one of the wives of late Chief MKO Abiola, on Saturday declared that she would contest the 2015 governorship election in the state on the ticket of ACCORD Party.

Onitiri-Abiola, wife of the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, made her intention public in a statement issued by her in Lagos.

The aspirant said that she joined the party to assist in the eradication of poverty

“Since there is no Independent Candidacy in Nigerian Political System yet, I needed to join a political party.

“During my search for the party to join, I found out that what we have on ground is severe poverty.

“I saw that the people of Lagos are yet to truly receive the dividends of democracy they deserve.

“I have seen the suffering of those caught in the grasp of poverty. I have also seen the great potentials our state can achieve,” she said.

Onitiri-Abiola said if she became successful at the polls, poverty, god-fatherism, money politics and corruption would be eliminated.

She said it was time for government at all levels to truly serve the people’s interest and raise their hopes and opportunities.

The aspirant said that she worked with her late husband in the struggle for the actualisation of the June 12 elections annulled by the military regime of former president Ibrahim Babangida in 1993.

She, however, said ACCORD party was the new way that would lead the people to the promised land where true benefits of democracy would be received.

The aspirant urged the people to stand up and accept change, adding that her party had their interests at heart.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Onitiri-Abiola had in 2013 declared her intention to contest the 2015 governorship seat in the state, but did not mention the platform on which she would contest. (NAN)

Oh how she’s changed! Bikini-clad Kim Kardashian reminds us what she used to look like in flashback snap

The Kardashians and their so many issues. It's really so hard keeping up with them lol.

New reports according to dailymail.co.uk states that Kim Kardashian must have enhanced her looks surgically, read about it below.

She has always denied going under the knife.
But Kim Kardashian may have given the game away with a new flashback picture.
The 33-year-old wears a black bikini as she pouts for the camera in the 2006 shot, her nose suspiciously different to what it is now.

In the snap, the reality star shows off her ample cleavage in a skimpy black bikini top as she poses with her Kourtney And Kim Take New York associate producer Carla DiBello.
Her naturally dark hair is worn straight and loose and she shields her eyes with giant gold-rimmed sunglasses and accessorises with large hoop earrings.
She captioned the 'Throwback Thursday' picture: '#TBT VEGA$ with @carladibello #Rehab #2006', referring to Rehab, the legendary pool party at the Hard Rock Hotel And Casino in Las Vegas.

But the star looks dramatically different nowadays, with her dyed blonde hair, wrinkle-free skin, and apparently smaller nose.
Her fans have noticed, with some accusing her on Instragam of undergoing surgery.
'When you weren't plastic,' one fan wrote.
'Yes you can tell you got face surgery girl you blowing your own cover,' another commented.
Admittedly, Kim's face has undergone several changes over the past year after she fell pregnant with baby North, born back in June.
The weight gain meant her already prominent pout became larger, which she attributed to having 'pregnancy lips.'
'My pregnancy lips are outta control #IGuessNotABadProblemToHave,' she wrote in May, alongside a snapshot of her pout via Twitter.
She was also forced to deny reports that she had been receiving botox injections while pregnant with North.
A spokesperson for the reality star said in May: 'It's absurd and NOT true!'
The report in In Touch magazine had alleged: 'She’s still getting injections even though she’s seven months pregnant.'
'She’s become more neurotic than ever about her looks,' a family insider told the magazine. 'She’ll do anything to be beautiful.'
Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Jon A. Perlman, who does not treat Kim, told the magazine 'the lack of upper facial wrinkling and expression suggest Botox. Her skin is too smooth.'

Kim has strongly denied ever having had plastic surgery, and even underwent an X-ray of her bottom on a previous episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians to prove she had not had implants.
Talking previously about the speculation, Kim said: 'Rumours don't bother me anymore. I've read that I've had my lips done. I've always had big lips. Look at my baby pictures. It's ridiculous.
'Or they'll show one picture of me today and one tomorrow, and say I've had my nose done in between. When? Didn't you just see me yesterday?
'And how many times have I "had my butt done"? People's logic is so weird. I don't know why they bother!'

Swede Kallstrom joins Arsenal on loan

Arsenal have completed the signing of Sweden midfielder Kim Kallstrom on loan until the end of the season from Russian club Spartak Moscow.
The 31-year-old will provide cover for the injured Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere, while Mathieu Flamini is suspended for the next three games.
Wenger said: "He has proven quality at both club and international level. We welcome Kim to Arsenal."
Meanwhile the Gunners boss has ruled out buying Schalke's Julian Draxler.
Kallstrom said: "Arsenal is an amazing club with a lot of great players and a coach who has done really well here for a long time.
"I am so pleased to come here to learn as much as possible. I'm here to do my best for Arsenal and to help out the team, so we can achieve good results for the last part of the season."
Kallstrom joined Spartak in 2012 following a six-year spell with Lyon, where he played more than 200 games and helped the French side to the Champions League semi-finals in 2010.
Wenger added: "We've been hit by the red card of Flamini, and Jack Wilshere is also not available. So in the area where we had plenty of players, suddenly we are a bit short."
Attacking midfielder Draxler, 20, who has played 10 times for Germany, was linked with a move to Arsenal and reportedly would have cost £37m.
He helped Schalke make it out of the group stage of the Champions League before Christmas.
The German side will play Real Madrid over two legs in the last 16.
"The Draxler situation has been created by the newspapers, not by me. He will stay at Schalke," said Wenger.

CHAN 2014: Nigeria rounds-off preparation for Zimbabwe clash

Nigeria is going to face Zimbabwe today in a third place match for the CHAN Tournament.

According to Premiumtimes news.
Irrespective of the outcome of the game, both teams will get $250,000 each.
The home based Super Eagles squad are through with their training ahead of Saturday’s third place clash against the warriors of Zimbabwe.
Friday’s training session held at the Greenpoint training pitch and lasted for a little over an hour with only the first fifteen minutes opened to the media.
From earlier observations, Gbolahan Salami still looks doubtful to play a role in the Zimbabwe clash having isolated himself from the early group exercises.
Nonetheless, the Eagles were in high spirits as they returned to their hotel ahead of their final assignment at the CHAN tournament on Saturday.
In a brief chat with journalists, Coach Stephen Keshi said his team have moved past their loss against Ghana and are now ready to go all out for the bronze in Saturday’s losers final.
“The Ghana game is already gone and we are not thinking of that anymore, we are have made sure we worked on the mistakes we made in our last match and by God’s grace and with the prayers of our fans, we should be able to do well against Zimbabwe,” the Eagles’ coach stated.
Some of the Eagles players who spoke with PREMIUM TIMES as regards the Zimbabwe clash said they are quite optimistic about their game against the Warriors.
One of the tournament’s revelations, Ejike Uzoenyi, said he believes he and his teammates can get the job done within the 90 minutes and save themselves the agony of playing extra time let alone penalty
kicks.
“I am look forward to a good game, I see us winning inside 90 minutes and convincingly too,” Ejike told PREMIUM TIMES.
Ugonna Uzochukwu, one of the players culpable of missing the penalty kicks in the semi-final game against Ghana said the Eagles will bounce back strong against the Warriors.
“We know this is our last chance to get something from this CHAN tournament so we are taking it seriously, by God’s grace we will win the game on Saturday,” the Enugu Rangers man stated.
Both Nigeria and Zimbabwe will battle for third place as they lost their semi-final match to Ghana and Libya respectively. Irrespective of the outcome of the game, both teams will get $250,000 (N37 million) each.

Lagos ruthless bulldozers roll into Badagry, leave 10,000 homeless

Residents describe the Lagos State government’s silence on the demolition as complacency and conspiracy with the police
George Egosoku watched with horror as the bulldozer’s huge blades ripped into his home, a bungalow built from the savings of his 35-year sojourn as a bus driver, and turned it into rubble.
With armed police officers keeping him and other stupefied home owners at bay, bulldozers and backhoes levelled about 1,500 buildings at Atinporomeh, Badagry, a Lagos suburb.
Mr. Egosoku is among the almost 10,000 residents of the community who have now been displaced following the demolition of their homes last December, despite a subsisting legal suit over the land.
“We woke in the morning to see that the police have demolished houses from the bus stop, and one after the other, the bulldozers brought down all the houses including mine and now I have nowhere to live but under these bricks,” said Mr. Egosoku, 70.
The bricks – few blocks mounted on one another and covered with a tarpaulin – is where Mr. Egosoku now calls home.
“The two rainfall, the last being heaviest so far this year, beat me so bad here because the breeze blew away my roof with mosquito biting the hell out of me,” said the septuagenarian.
“I have no money to rent a house and no place to go,” he said.
“I cannot stand the shame of going to live with my brother, his wife, and five children where they have already relocated to,” he added.
HOMELESS AND HELPLESS
The community’s problems began on December 14, last year, when the police authority brought a notice of eviction which claimed that the Nigeria Police Force had become the “rightful owner” of the community’s land.
The letter, with the heading: ‘Encroachment on Police land located at Agemowo/Agelado Mowo via Badagry’ was signed by F.G Ogundeji, a Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Realizing that Agemowo/Agelado Mowo and Atinporomeh are two different communities, the inhabitants quickly reached out to lawyer at Ricky Tarfa Chambers. Declan Kemdiri, a lawyer in the chamber, immediately wrote to the police authority, reminding them of a subsisting court order directing a stay of action on the land.
Mr. Kemdiri further highlighted that the land being claimed by the police, in Agemowo/Agelado communities, is entirely distinct from that in Atinporomeh.
Ignoring the lawyer’s letter, the law enforcement agencies, accompanied by bulldozers, stormed Atinporomeh at 3 a.m. the next day demolishing schools, churches, hotels, shopping complexes, as well as residential homes.
“The police arrived with four Black Maria vans where they arrested and locked up anyone that resisted, 18 bulldozers and five caterpillars to quickly and swiftly level the buildings before the break of dawn,” said Mr. Kemdiri.
On a recent visit to Atinporomeh community, broken blocks and bricks scattered over where used to be residential homes.
Charles Adu, the community’s Chairman, described the demolition as “man’s inhumanity to man.”
“This is a very peaceful community with no government presence as we built our schools, markets and roads ourselves,” Mr. Adu said.
“This is a community that pays its annual land use to the state government. It is not a shanty town that harbours criminals, a swampy community with buildings built under high tension lines.
“The demolition of houses which are still in a case before the court under the purview of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (Governor Babatunde Fashola) is a gross abuse of human rights,” Mr. Adu added.
GOVERNMENT’s ‘DEAFENING’ SILENCE
Mr. Adu described the Lagos State government’s silence on the demolition as complacency and conspiracy with the police.
“This is a collaboration between the state government and the federal government and the state government has not visited this place or said anything about it.
This is a government that has no housing policy and the governor and no official has said anything about our plight up till now,” said Mr. Adu, who lost his house and a shopping complex in the demolition.
Last week, the community took their protest to the governor’s office at Alausa but they were told that Mr. Fashola was absent.
is deafening and one wonders what the government is up to on this issue,” said Mr. Kemdirim.
In 2011, a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police identified simply as Mrs. Obembe began moves to acquire the community, according to Mr. Kemdirim, after claiming that she had paid N176 million for the land.
Mrs. Obembe reportedly claimed that she had gotten approval to build a police quarters on the 15-hectare land.
The residents promptly approached a court in Badagry where they got a stay of action order.
They also embarked on a protest to the Lagos State House of Assembly, forcing the Speaker to summon officials of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Renewal who denied issuing any such notice.
Efforts to speak with the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development were not successful. Phone calls and text messages were not responded to.
Mr. Egosoku said that he would remain in his make-shift home until he was compensated for his demolished building.
“I spent about N3 million of all my life savings in building this house and if government does not compensate me, they will have to carry me out from here,” he said.
“Even if they carry me from here, I will remain on the road for people to see me until I die,” he added.
